HD HHI Press Release translated by Naval News

HD HHI obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) from the Korean Register (KR) based on the International Naval Safety Association (INSA) for submarine safety.

Due to the nature of underwater operations, safety is the most critical element in submarine construction. In January of this year, HD HHI signed agreements with DNV and KR, introducing Korea’s first-ever ‘submarine safety certification system’ that complies with safety standards.

The Approval in Principle (AIP) is a procedure that verifies the safety and performance feasibility of a design. With this certification, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ HDS-2300 submarine has been recognized for complying with international safety standards.

The export-oriented submarine ‘HDS-2300,’ which received the AIP, is a model independently developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Its specifications include a surface displacement of 2,300 tons, a length of 73.0 meters, a beam of 8.5 meters, and a maximum surface speed of 20 knots (about 37 km/h).

“We are pleased to have received Approval in Principle from both domestic and international classification societies, applying international safety standards to a Korean submarine for the first time. Based on the reliability of this export-oriented submarine model, we will strengthen our position not only in the surface ship market but also in the overseas submarine market.”
