Australia France India Japan and the United States Take Part in Exercise La Pérouse
BAY OF BENGAL (April 5, 2021) Ships operate in the Bay of Bengal in support of exercise La Perouse 2021, April 5. La Perouse consists of naval assets from Australia, France, India, Japan and the United States. La Perouse is an exercise conducted during the annual French Navy midshipman deployment called Mission Jeanne d'Arc. The exercise is designed to conduct training, enhance cooperation in maritime surveillance, maritime interdiction operations, and air operations. As the U.S. Navy's largest forward-deployed fleet, 7th Fleet employs 50-70 ships and submarines across the Western Pacific and Indian oceans. U.S. 7th Fleet routinely operates and interacts with 35 maritime nations while conducting missions to preserve and protect a free and open Indo-Pacific Region. The multinational naval exercise La Pérouse kicked off yesterday in the Eastern Indian Ocean. Ships and aircraft of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), French Navy, Indian Navy, Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) and United States Navy (USN) take part in the three day exercise.

La Pérouse is an exercise during the annual French Navy midshipman deployment called Mission Jeanne d’Arc. The exercise is designed to conduct training, enhance cooperation in maritime surveillance, maritime interdiction operations, and air operations.

La Pérouse is led by the French Navy with participation of Mistral-class LHD Tonnerre and La Fayette-class frigate Surcouf. The US Navy is represented in the exercise by San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship Somerset. Her Majesty’s Australian Ships (HMAS) Anzac, a frigateandtanker Sirius have been deployed by the Royal Australian Navy for participation in the exercise while Japan Maritime Self Defence Ship (JMSDF) is represented by the destroyer Akebono. In addition to the ships, integral helicopters embarked onboard ships will also participate in the exercise. Exercise La Pérouse consists in complex and advanced naval operations including surface warfare, anti-air warfare and air defence exercises, weapon firing exercises, cross deck flying operations, tactical manoeuvres and seamanship evolutions such as replenishment at sea.

The exercise showcases high levels of synergy, coordination and inter-operability between the friendly navies.
