He said the upgrade of the dry dock done by Zvyozdochka Shipyard needed a clear schedule. In particular, the minister pointed to the need to increase the workforce and the amount of machinery on the reconstruction site.

Shoigu did not agree with USC explanations that the first contractor was dishonest and had to be replaced.

“I do not accept the explanations. We need the dock and have to overhaul and upgrade the Admiral Kuznetsov,”

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu

The upgrade of the dock will make it the largest facility in the Russian Arctic that will service large-displacement ships and vessels, such as nuclear-powered icebreakers, heavy missile and aircraft carrying cruisers.

The upgrade of the dry dock is a key factor for timely modernization of the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier.

Naval News comments:

The Russian Navy starter the overhaul of Admiral Kuznetsov in 2017 after an operational deployment off the Syrian coast. In October 2018, the carrier was leaving the floating PD-50 dock of the 82nd shipyard in Roslyakovo when the dock began to sink. A crane fell on the deck because of list. On December 12, 2019 a fire broke out on the carrier. The Admiral Kuznetsov is currently in the 35th shipyard in Murmansk.
