“As you know, construction of a huge shipyard is well underway in the Far East. A dry dock has been built in Bolshoi Kamen. We hope that you will be able to see it during the Vladivostok forum. A new super-powerful Leader-class icebreaker has been laid down there, gas carriers are being built. In short, the project is in progress,”

“As regards shipbuilding, you know that historically it has been focused on military items, now we have launched a major change,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov

The lead icebreaker with a capacity of 120 MW will be the first icebreaker in the world that will be able to lead ships along the Northern Sea Route in 4-meter thick ice round-the-year.

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev told TASS earlier that the cost is estimated at 120 billion rubles at the 2019 value. The Industry and Trade Ministry said that the cost cannot exceed 127.5 billion rubles. The construction is financed by the federal budget. The project is planned to be completed in 2027.

The construction of two serial Leader icebreakers will start in 2023 and 2025. They will be made operational in 2030 and 2032 respectively.
