The hypersonic version ofย the BrahMos cruise missile, the BrahMos-II, will probably have the same performance characteristics asย Russiaโ€™s Tsirkon missile, CEO ofย the Russia-India Joint Venture BrahMos Aerospace Atul Rane told TASS, adding that itย would take upย toย five orย six years before its first flight trials.

The hypersonic version isย being developed byย Russiaโ€™s Research and Production Association ofย Machine-Building (NPO Mashinostroeniya) and Indiaโ€™s Defense Research and Development Organization.

According to Atul Rane, the design of the hypersonic version has been worked out by both sides.

โ€œWhen they give usย the technologies, then weย will developย it. Initially, its trials were scheduled for 2021 and then 2024. Iย think that five orย six years will beย needed before its first tests take place,โ€ the CEO said.

When asked ifย the BrahMos-II missile would have some characteristics of the Tsirkon missile, Rane said that itย was โ€œpossible.โ€

โ€œThe whole world isย working onย aย hypersonic cruise missile. The USย and China are developing hypersonic versions ofย their cruise missiles. But they doย not have themย yet. Iย have not seen anyone inย the world having hypersonic cruise missiles. Russia says itย tested the Tsirkon hypersonic antiship cruise missile developed byย NPO Mashinostroeniya.โ€

Heย pointed out that the hypersonic version ofย the BrahMos missile would beย very expensive.

The CEO noted that the BrahMos-II missile would not beย exported. โ€œWeย will not beย able toย export the Brahmos hypersonic version. Itย will only beย produced for Russia and India,โ€ heย said.

Rane explained that India, being aย party toย the Missile Technology Control Regime, can develop aย missile with aย range ofย over 300 kmย (186 mi) and aย weight ofย over 500 kg, but cannot hand itย over toย third countries.

The BrahMos isย aย supersonic cruise missile produced byย the Russia-India Joint Venture BrahMos Aerospace. The missile has been jointly developed byย Russiaโ€™s NPO Mashinostroeniya and Indiaโ€™s Defense Research and Development Organization.

The first test launch of the BrahMos missile took place in 2001. Its different versions are operational with Indiaโ€™s Navy, Air Force and Army. BrahMos Aerospace is based in New Delhi. The BrahMos missile was named after the Brahmaputra River of India and the Moskva River of Russia.
