The ROK Navy said on the 3rd, “The guided-missile live-fire exercise was carried out in a procedure in which DDH-II ‘Gang Gam-chan’ responded with SM-2 guided missiles to a target simulating an enemy aircraft approaching at high speed.”
According to the Navy, DDH-II ‘Gang Gam-chan’ fired an SM-2 guided missile at a high-speed approaching target that multiple direction and time. the missile hit the target accurately.
In particular, in this live-fire exercise, the Samcheok Marine Research Center of the ADD (Agency for Defense Development), which was established this year, checked the flight trajectory and flight posture of the SM-2 guided missile in real time and evaluated the target hit situation. This will enable scientific and objective analysis of guided missile firing training, as well as future developmental lessons.
U.S. Navy engineers, as well as the ROK Navy and the ADD (Agency for Defense Development), participated together to support the entire process from preparation to analysis of guided missiles.

The Navy emphasized, “The success of this live-fire exercise is meaningful in that it can improve the integrity of guided weapons operation and improve ship combat readiness by establishing a domestic due diligence analysis system for guided weapons, and by laying the foundation for domestic guided weapons verification, it can increase the reliability of the Korean defense industry, support technology development, and reduce the budget for due diligence training.”
The South Korean Navy had previously conducted live-fire drills for SM-2 missiles but this was in US waters, during RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise).
In the future, using this system to conduct live-fire guided weapons training in Korea will not only increase ship operability but also reduce the cost in preparation for overseas live-fire training.

The ROK Navy plans to use the Samcheok Maritime Research Center to verify the combat capability and increase its readiness for combat by conducting various live-fire drills. “We plan to contribute to the development and reliability of domestic precision-guided weapons by providing scientific analysis and evaluation results of domestic ship combat systems and guided missiles with defense weapons system manufacturing companies.”
