Hanwha Systems press release
This tactical training ground allows for navigation and tactical training of the Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine on land. It is divided into various spaces including a training room, control room, and debriefing room, replicating the internal submarine environment and the marine and underwater sonar environment around the Korean Peninsula. This enables crew members to significantly enhance their skills in underwater navigation and weapons operations without having to go out to the sea.
The training room is equipped with the same devices installed in the Dosan Ahn Changho, including a multifunctional console and a navigation console, using the Combat Management System (CMS). This setup enhances the realism of navigation and tactical training. Simulators for sonar signals and other sensors and weapons onboard also allow for a complete simulation of combat situations.
Notably, the newly constructed tactical training ground incorporates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), supporting a more dynamic training environment. Unlike previous submarine tactical training grounds that operated targets according to preorganized scenarios, the AI algorithm in this facility provides unpredictable and versatile maneuvering and engagement situations, enabling the Korean Navy to develop its command and tactical operation capabilities through various scenarios.
The Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine, launched in 2018, is the first 3000-ton class submarine constructed with domestic design and technology and is part of Korea’s Chang Bogo-III (KSS-III) submarine development project.
As the uncertain maritime battlefield environment demands swift and accurate submarine operations to fully deploy underwater strategic weapons, the need for a tactical training ground on land, which can train without the spatial and temporal constraints of the sea, has increased.
Hanwha Systems has been working on the research and development of submarine tactical training facilities since signing a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration in October 2018. With the support of the Submarine Command, Hanwha Systems has successfully localized the submarine tactical training ground.
The recently inaugurated Dosan Ahn Changho-class tactical training ground is designed for facilitated performance improvement and is expected to greatly enhance the navigation and operation capabilities of our Navy’s submarines for various future submarine models.
“Based on the successful experience of constructing the first tactical training ground for the Chang Bogo-III project submarines, we will actively participate in the construction projects for subsequent submarine tactical training grounds, contributing to the enhancement of the Navy’s training capabilities. We also plan to explore package export opportunities for submarine combat systems and tactical training grounds to various countries, including Europe and Southeast Asia.”
