Fincantieri press release
For the first time since the start of the U212 NFS program, a complete Lithium-Ion battery system, made by POWER4FUTURE, has been powered up and tested, comprising six modules and a conversion device for energy management, all entirely designed and produced in Italy. The test, which was successfully witnessed, reproduced operating situations in real conditions, thus demonstrating the excellent functioning of the system during the charging and discharging phases, with constant checks on key parameters such as voltage, current and temperature.
The outcome confirms the great result of the close collaboration between OCCAR (Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation), NAVARM (Naval Armaments Directorate), Fincantieri S.p.A. and the industrial chain composed of leading companies such as POWER4FUTURE S.p.A. (a company controlled by Fincantieri SI, part of the Fincantieri group and participated by the FAIST group) and FIB S.p.A. (a company controlled by the SERI Industrial Group), within the program of modernization of the submarine capabilities of the Italian Navy. The project also includes the creation of a cutting-edge laboratory at the POWER4FUTURE plant, which will also serve as a training center for the technical personnel and crews involved.
The activity represents today a milestone towards the homologation of the entire Lithium Ion battery system, which not only guarantees high performance, but fully meets the highest safety and reliability standards achieved for this application in Europe and required by OCCAR and the Navy.
This achievement is part of Fincantieri’s consolidated commitment to the underwater sector, which boasts a long experience in the design and construction of advanced technologies for operations below sea level. Over the years, the Group has developed cutting-edge solutions for submarines and hydro-oceanographic units, confirming itself as a point of reference for technological capacity and reliability in this field.
