Safran upgrades submarines optronic masts with AI

Safran Electronics and Defense is now applying its proprietary AI algorithm to help with the image processing and with the detection, identification and classification of contacts captured from the submarines optronic masts.

In this video, Pierre-Olivier Nougues, VP sales and marketing, explains that Safran focuses on three areas when applying AI to optronic masts:

1) Image Restoration: Enhancing sensor images for clearer visuals, even in challenging weather conditions.
2) AI-Powered Detection & Tracking: Using restored images for automated detection, tracking, and classification.
3) Visual Navigation: AI-driven solutions for precise submarine positioning, complementing inertial navigation, especially at periscope depth.

Thanks to this technology, the search mast (which can provide full panoramic scans) is turned into a “passive radar” providing all types of video images in the visual spectrum, IR spectrum, in low light conditions and in daylight conditions.

Safran Optronic Masts are currently fitted on both types of Barracuda type submarines (French Suffren-class SSN and Dutch Orka-class SSK), Scorpene type submarines, Swedish Gotland-class submarines (and the future Blekinge-class) and South Korea’s KSS III Batch 1 and Batch 2 submarines.
