The German Navy has so far ordered eight P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from the United States, which are being built by Boeing. Delivery of the first aircraft is scheduled for the coming months. According to the draft federal budget for 2026 recently submitted to the Bundestag, a further €2.8 billion in so-called commitment appropriations are now earmarked for the P-8A for the years 2028 to 2032. In the draft budget for 2025, which was submitted to parliament a few months ago, only commitment appropriations of just under 700 million euros were earmarked for the period from 2028 to 2030.

Observers therefore assume that this jump in commitment appropriations will not only be used to procure equipment such as buoys, torpedoes and simulators for the P-8A, but also additional aircraft. According to experts, the navy has an additional requirement for at least four more maritime patrol aircraft of this type.
In the ‘Kurs Marine 2025’ published a few months ago, which supplements the 2035+ target vision already published in 2023, the number of projected P-8As has been increased from eight to between eight and twelve. Observers even assume that there is an additional requirement for six aircraft, possibly to ensure a reserve fleet.
Since procurement normally takes place via the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) system, the federal government enters into a contract with the relevant US armed forces, in this case the US Navy. A letter of request must be submitted for this purpose. However, procurement is only possible if the Bundestag has approved the project. The bill has not yet been debated.
