As the Brazilian Navy will soon commission its first Tamandaré-class frigate (a milestone set for April 24), Brazil’s President announced plans to order four more ships of this class.
The Surface Fleet Renewal Programme (PROSUPER), which acquired four Tamandaré-class frigates for the Brazilian Navy, will see its first unit commissioned into operational service. The F200, which lends its name to the class, was fully built in Brazil by the Águas Azuis Consortium formed by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defesa & Segurança and Atech, at the Itajaí shipyard, and has been marked by the transfer of German technology and the qualification of the national workforce.
During Brazil’s participation at the Hannover Industrial Fair, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this week stated that the country has made progress in negotiations to acquire four additional vessels. Launched on 9 August 2024, the ship has a displacement of 3,500 tonnes and features a flight deck and hangar for a helicopter. With a crew of 130 personnel, it has a top speed of approximately 27 knots in open sea. Its range is 5,200 km, and its armament includes a Leonardo 76/62 mm SR gun; a Rheinmetall Sea Snake 30 mm gun; SEA TLS-TT torpedo launch system; Terma C-Guard decoy system; and the MBDA SEA CEPTOR air defence system. The combat management system is supplied by Atlas Elektronik, along with the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) provided by L3Harris.
The sensor suite includes the Hensoldt TRS-4D ROT volume search radar; Thales STIR 1.2 fire control radar; Atlas Elektronik ASO 713 hull-mounted sonar; Raytheon surface search radar (S-band); MB/Omnisys Defensor MK3 ESM system; Safran PASEO XLR optronic systems; and Raytheon navigation radars (X-band).
Rohde & Schwarz is responsible for the design, development, production, integration, and acceptance of the entire internal and external communications suite. The combat management system is the Atlas-ANCS, and the integrated platform management system is L3 Mapps.
Propulsion is provided by a MAN 12V 28/33D STC main engine.
In June 2025, the keel of the third frigate, Cunha Moreira (F202), was laid, followed by the launch of the second vessel, F201 Jerônimo de Albuquerque (F201), on 8 August, 2025.
Weapons testing
Between 9 and 13 April, in the Cabo Frio (RJ) region, the Brazilian Navy conducted a live-fire exercise, successfully completing the certification of the Tamandaré’s combat and weapons systems.
The 76 mm gun and Mk 54 lightweight torpedoes were employed, operating in conjunction with the combat management system, which integrates acquisition sensors, electronic warfare systems, and radars.
During the exercise, the frigate Defensora (F41) and an AH-11B Wild Lynx helicopter also took part, contributing to system integration in a more complex operational environment.
