The U.S. Navy conducted four scheduled missile test flights of unarmed Trident II (D5) submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) from USS Nebraska, an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), off the coast of Southern California this week.

North Korean state media KCNA released footage showing the communist leader inspecting a new submarine under construction at a shipyard. This new submarine appears to be based on the late 50ies Romeo-class, a Soviet design, and is likely able to deploy a limited number of submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM).

The US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) completed the First Production Unit (FPU) of the W76-2 warhead Feb. 22 at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. The W76-2 is a modification of the W76-1 warhead to provide a low-yield, sea-launched ballistic missile warhead capability.
