This brings the total number of identical MEKO frigates procured to eight, as stated in a press release from the Federal Ministry of Defense. According to well-informed sources, approximately five billion euros have been allocated for this purpose.
The committee had already given the green light for the procurement of the first four frigates of this type on July 8th. The industry has committed to starting delivery of the ships in 2029.
The frigates are to be procured primarily for anti-submarine warfare. The German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg) writes that NATO has been promised a wide range of capability contributions within the framework of capability and defense planning. In addition to other capabilities, the navy will make a significant contribution to defense and deterrence in the North and Baltic Seas, as well as in the Atlantic and the High North, through its sea-based anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The priority is the timely equipping of the navy with the urgently needed weapon systems, supplemented by ongoing personnel and infrastructure expansion.
The F-126 frigate was originally intended for sea-based anti-submarine warfare. Following significant performance issues, the federal government, after a comprehensive overall assessment, ultimately withdrew from the contract with the general contractor, Damen Werft, the ministry writes.
The German Navy has therefore examined market-available alternatives and confirmed that the MEKO A-200 DEU-class frigates are suitable for anti-submarine warfare and fulfilling Germany’s NATO obligations. Furthermore, the procurement of eight frigates of a uniform ship type offers the German Navy significant advantages in terms of operation, maintenance, and training.
