According to their press release, the Peruvian government will spend 45 billion Korean won ($36 million) on this project alone.
STX previously supplied a total of six maritime patrol boats to Peru since 2013, and with this order it is expected to supply 7th and 8th patrol boats for the Peruvian Navy.
“Our company have secured a firm position in the Peruvian defense market. Previous deliveries of maritime patrol boats helped boosting the crackdown rate of illegal fishing along the Peruvian coast from mere 1 percent to more than 15 percent.”

The new patrol boats will be 56.4m in length, 8.5 meters in width and will have a maximum speed of 23 knots or 42.6 kilometers per hour with a displacement of 500 tons. These boats will be powered by 2x Caterpillar 3516C HD diesel engines which produce roughly 3,400 shp of thrust in total.
The vessels will be equipped with one 30mm Typhoon RCWS (Remote Controlled Weapon Stations) and two sets of 12.7mm MiniTyphoon machine guns. It wil also be equipped with one Toplite EOS (Electro-Optical, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) platform which helps the ship to better guard Peru’s coast, cracking down on illegal fishing and drug smuggling while also playing a huge role in preventing maritime terrorism.
For this contract, STX will partner with SIMA Shipyard, a Peruvian shipyard with century-old heritage and manages most of the ships of the Peruvian Government. STX will take part in designing the ships and supplying key parts to Peru, while SIMA will locally build the ship under STX’s supervision. The two ships will be built and delivered to Peruvian Coast Guard in the first half of 2025, according to the press release.
Additionally, STX is targeting on future business opportunities in Latin American countries, owing much to its abundant experiences in local construction of ships and timely delivery. STX also expects that there will be a great need for patrol ships in this region in general in the coming decade, as drug smuggling and illegal fishing have become a serious issue within the region.
