Hanwha’s three key defense companies — Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Systems — will jointly present their vision for the future of maritime defense at MADEX 2025 (International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition), taking place from May 28 at BEXCO in Busan. Together, they will unveil a fully integrated naval solution that spans warships, unmanned systems, and energy infrastructure.

Hanwha press release

This unified offering brings together Hanwha Ocean’s world-class capabilities in surface ships and submarines, Hanwha Systems’ unrivaled expertise in Combat Management Systems (CMS) and unmanned platforms, and Hanwha Aerospace’s innovative lithium-ion energy storage systems (ESS) — all working in synergy to deliver powerful, future-ready maritime solutions.

For the first time, the three affiliates will operate a joint Hanwha Pavilion at MADEX. The pavilion will combine physical displays with immersive digital content to present Hanwha’s integrated vision for the future naval battlespace.

Hanwha Ocean will showcase its full-spectrum capabilities, highlighting next-generation destroyers and submarines built with innovative designs and advanced technologies. Alongside its proven expertise in designing and constructing export-ready warships, Hanwha will also demonstrate its growing strength in MRO, reinforcing its position as a global leader in naval shipbuilding—including both manned and unmanned platforms.

The exhibition will feature 17 advanced naval assets, including 10 unmanned vessels, 4 surface ships, and 3 submarines—all integrating Hanwha’s latest innovations.

In the unmanned systems section, highlights include a combat Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) and a Command-and-Control Ship for manned-unmanned teaming. The latter is a strategic asset designed to support the Navy’s “Smart Navy” vision and its Sea GHOST concept, capable of operating and commanding a wide range of unmanned and manned assets for complex maritime missions.

The surface ship lineup includes a future destroyer incorporating electric propulsion, an integrated mast, advanced hull forms, networked combat systems, and a smart bridge designed to reduce crew requirements. A next-generation frigate with enhanced ballistic missile defense capabilities will also be unveiled.

In the submarine segment, Hanwha will present a variety of models tailored to both domestic and global markets, including 2,000-ton and 3,000-ton class platforms. Of particular note is the 3,600-ton submarine—garnering interest from countries such as Poland and Canada—which is the world’s first to combine Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) with lithium-ion battery technology. This combination enables the longest submerged endurance among existing diesel-electric submarines. These future submarines also feature stealth shaping, advanced detection systems, and high-performance propulsion, and can be customized to meet the specific operational needs of international clients.

Hanwha Systems will debut its Combat Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV), designed to prevent enemy infiltration in forward-area waters. As the dominant provider of CMS for the Korean Navy — with a 99% share across surface and subsurface fleets — Hanwha Systems will also unveil Attacker UCV, next-generation CMS, and unmanned maritime combat technologies that showcase its technological leadership.

Highlights from Hanwha Systems include:

  • An advanced cockpit-style Integrated Bridge System (IBS)
  • Future-ready consoles and intelligent CMS for next-generation surface combatants
  • Combat systems for the Sohn Won-il (214-class) submarines and their export variants
  • Korea’s only military-grade low-earth orbit satellite communication system, enabling seamless connectivity across manned and unmanned naval domains

On the opening day of MADEX, Hanwha will host a VIP cocktail reception, welcoming over one hundred distinguished guests including Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Yang, Yong Mo, international military delegations, and key defense industry stakeholders. The event will spotlight Hanwha’s integrated capabilities and its forward-looking role in shaping the future maritime battlespace.

“At MADEX 2025, we are proud to demonstrate the combined strength of our three defense affiliates. From best-in-class shipbuilding to intelligent command systems and energy innovation, Hanwha is uniquely positioned to deliver end-to-end naval solutions that meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s defense forces around the world.”
