German Navy F124-class Frigate Hamburg Set for 5-month Indo-Pacific Deployment

German Navy's Hamburg F124 Sachsen-class frigate is about to travel abroad for several months in the Indo-Pacific waters, including to Reunion island and Australia, the Germany Armed Forces announced today.

In May, the Hamburg air defense frigate will first took part in a missile live-fire exercice off the Norwegian coast. From the beginning of June, the ship and crew are expecting to start a five-month training mission in the Indian Ocean.

The deployment includes a visit to the French island of Reunion. The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), held by the French Navy (Marine Nationale), will take place there at the end of June. IONS comprises 23 neighboring countries of the Indian Ocean and 9 observer nations. Germany has an observation role here. In connection with the IONS, the frigate will take part in DEFRAM (German-French Naval Force) sea maneuver.

The ship of the 2nd Flotilla (EinsFltl 2) will then sail from Wilhelmshaven to Australia and will probably make call from there in different ports of the Indian Ocean. In addition to port visits, exercises with the naval forces of the respective host countries are planned.

The Hamburg frigate is currently still being prepared for deployment. After leaving its home port, the frigate takes part as the flagship to the port birthday in Hamburg from 8 to 10 May.
