April Fools: There Is No Type-100 Super Submarine

The Typhoon class is still the King of submarines. China hasn't just launched a submarine which dwarfs it.

H I Sutton 02 Apr 2021

The Type-100 submarine is fictional. The world can sleep better knowing that there is no new mega submarine, with 48 missile silos, plus eight ‘hydrosonic’ nuclear torpedoes, plus a submarine on its back, heading through the Suez Canal towards the Arctic.

The article is a joke in the tradition of April 1st being April Fool’s Day. We hope that you enjoyed it.
In the modern age such a trick is easily found out. You can see for yourself that the submarine isn’t there in satellite imagery. The below image, from a Sentinel 2 satellite, was taken yesterday.

Sentinal-2 satellite image of Bohai Shipyard, China, taken April 1 2021. The submarine is clearly not present at the piers in the center of the image. This source was available online during the time that the April Fools’ joke was running.

In truth the article was not intended to genuinely deceive. The submarine and the text do not stand up to scrutiny. But we are aware that some readers, or at least other media outlets (not naming names but ones who should know better!), fell for it. And for that we are sorry.

All other articles on Naval News are serious news, we only do this once per year.
