“Today, we hoist the Navy flag on the Kazan latest nuclear submarine, which is the lead sub in the series of new-generation warships. Malakhit Design Bureau developed the project with effective arms and electronic equipment for the missions in all areas of the World Ocean,”

Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov

Sevmash CEO Mikhail Budnochenko said over a hundred enterprises contributed to the Kazan construction. Project 885M is built in a major series, he added.

The acceptance act was signed by Budnichenko and chair of the acceptance commission Captain 1st rank Alexey Poteshin. It was approved by the Navy chief and confirmed the successful completion of submarine trials. The Kazan successfully fired Kalibr missile at a coastal target and Onyx missile at a sea target.

The Navy currently operates the Severodvinsk SSGN of the basic project 885. Sevmash laid it in 1993 and floated in 2010. It operates in the Northern fleet. The Kazan will also join the Northern fleet. The Novosibirsk SSGN was floated in December 2019 and will operate in the Pacific fleet, which it has to join in late 2021.

Sevmash is building the Krasnoyarsk, the Arkhangelsk, the Perm, the Ulyanovsk, the Voronezh, and the Vladivostok SSGN of project 885M. The Krasnoyarsk is to be floated in August 2021.

The series of eight project 885M SSGN is to be completed in 2028 with the Vladivostok sub.
