Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov said at the laying ceremony:
“Today we are laying another warship of the series of minesweepers. It is named after Afanasy Ivanovich Ivannikov, who was a legend of the Northern fleet and a Hero of the Soviet Union. The minesweepers are unique, as nobody in the world has ever built them with such materials, technologies, and displacement,”
The Afanasy Ivannikov is the ninth minesweeper of project 12700 laid by Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard. The Alexandrite project was designed by Almaz Bureau. The warships have the biggest in the world fiberglass hull with an unlimited life cycle.
The Russian Navy plans to order another ten minesweepers of project 12700, Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov said:
“It is a good and reliable project. As I said, it uses the most advanced technologies in the world. The minesweepers have properly and reliably performed and have a major survivability. We are completing the first series and will order another ten minesweepers,”
