Russia to resume tests of Tsirkon hypersonic missile from submarine in 2024

The flight development tests of the Tsirkon hypersonic missile from an underwater carrier after two successful test-launches will be resumed in 2024 from the Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear-powered submarine Perm (NATO reporting name: Severodvinsk-class), a source in the defense industry told TASS.

By TASS Russian news agency

The source said:

“The flight development tests from an underwater carrier are planned to be resumed no sooner than in 2024. They will be carried out from the Project 885M submarine Perm that will differ from its predecessors by a slightly modified design. If the submarine is not be ready for the Tsirkon test-launches in 2024, they will be resumed in the first half of 2025,”

TASS has no official confirmation of the information provided by the source.

As TASS reported earlier, the modified submarine Perm that is the fifth Project 885M nuclear-powered submarine will be the first regular underwater carrier of Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. The submarine is planned to be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2025.

The Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) is currently building six Project 885M submarines. The Project 885 and Project 885M lead submarines Severodvinsk and Kazan are operational with the Russian Navy. The first serial Project 885M submarine Novosibirsk is currently undergoing trials. It is planned to enter service with the Navy by the yearend.

On October 4, the nuclear-powered submarine Severodvinsk test-fired Tsirkon hypersonic missiles from the surface and underwater positions in the White Sea for the first time.
