We welcome our Sentinel-class Maritime Security and Response Vessels (MSRVs) Protector and Bastion into the Maritime Security and Response Flotilla (MSRF)! The MSRVs are fitted with a bespoke complement of less-lethal systems which provide the RSN with more options to deal with a full spectrum of threats posed by our evolving maritime security environment. With the addition of Protector and Bastion, the MSRF is now at full strength, ready to undertake various maritime security operations to defend the sovereignty and ensure the security of our waters!

The Republic of Singapore Navy inaugurated the Maritime Security and Response Flotilla (MSRF) on 26 January 2021 to boost Singapore’s maritime security capabilities. Four former Fearless-class patrol vessels are refurbished and re-inducted into service as Sentinel-class Maritime Security and Response Vessels (MSRVs) alongside two Maritime Security Tugboats (MSRTs) until future purpose-built ships come into play. The flotilla will operate new purpose-built vessels after 2026.

Four ex-Fearless class patrol vessels have been refurbished as the Sentinel-class MSRVs. In addition to refitting the vessels to extend their operational lifespan, the Sentinel-class MSRVs will be installed with a range of calibrated capabilities. This includes enhanced communications equipment, improved visual and audio warning systems, installation of a fender system, and modular ballistics protection.

The patrol vessel is 55 meters long and has a steel monohull and V-shaped frames in the forward portions. She has a beam of 8.6 meters, as well as a draught of 2.7 meters. The 500-tonne vessel can cruise with a top speed of 20 knots.

The vessel’s main gun, installed on the bow deck, is the Oto Melara 76mm, she is also fitted with a Typhoon Mk 25 mm Gun at the stern side. The Long Range Acoustic Device and Laser Dazzler System provides crew to protect verbal warnings and issue visual warnings day and night.
