Navantia press release – Translation by Naval News

The S-81 ‘Isaac Peral’ submarine made its maiden voyage in Cartagena Bay, following its demanding schedule to meet safety milestones.

The four-hour surface sailing marks the beginning of the Isaac Peral’s (S-81) sea trials. In the coming months, until delivery to the Spanish Navy in 2023, the Navantia Shipyard in Cartagena will conduct the various port and sea trials scheduled in the calendar, including docking the submarine during the summer months.

“The submarine is a system of systems, and it is important to verify the correct functioning of all systems and their integration. This first cruise has confirmed the excellent level of integration and performance. For all of us working on this project, verifying the achievement of the different milestones is a source of pride and an incentive to continue moving forward in this technological challenge.”

Germán Romero called the first trial of the S-81 a “success.” Romero pointed out that this is one of the most important milestones in this program, “which represents a technological leap for both the Spanish Navy and Navantia.” With the development of this program, Navantia becomes a technical design authority and Spain joins the small group of countries that have the capability to design, build and maintain submarines.

The Isaac Peral, designed and built in Spain, was launched in May 2021 after a ceremony presided over by His Majesty the King and with Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias as the ship’s godmother.
