Navantia conducts first dive of 2nd S80 submarine ‘Narciso Monturiol’

Navantia’s shipyard in Cartagena has completed the installation of the Hydrogen based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) into a S80 class submarine.
Exail has secured a contract with Navantia to supply its Gecdis-W Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System (WECDIS) for the four Spanish S80 Plus-class submarines.
Navantia conducted the initial sea trials of the first S-80 class submarine, Isaac Peral (S-81), in the Bay of Cartagena on May 27, 2022.
The “Isaac Peral” hit the water for the first time on Friday, at Navantia’s shipyard in Cartagena. Pierside (harbor) trials is the next step, with various safety milestones, such as the loading of diesel oil, the charging of the batteries or the pierside propulsion test.
His Majesty King Felipe VI, accompanied by Her Majesty the Queen, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias and Her Royal Highness Infanta Sofia has presided over the launching ceremony of S-81, the first submarine of S-80 class, in Navantia shipyard in Cartagena (Murcia, Spain).

Navantia and Ansys are significantly reducing the development time and increasing the performance of next-generation navy ships including F-110 frigates and S80 submarines.

Abengoa has inked a contract with Navantia to supply its AIP system to the future S80 Plus submarines of the Spanish Navy. Abengoa’s solution was selected in Feb. 2020 by the General Directorate of Armament and Material of the Spanish MoD. The Spanish company stated that its AIP system will allow the S80 Plus to operate for up to 3 weeks without surfacing.

Navantia has participated in the “Underwater Defence & Security 2020” Conference, organized by Defence Leaders, that took place in Southampton, in London from 3-5 March.
