Interview with Naval Group on their proposal for the Walrus-class submarine replacement program.

Xavier Vavasseur 30 Nov 2022

The French shipbuilder is proposing a conventional submarine based on the Barracuda type nuclear-powered submarine (in service with the French Navy and known as Suffren-class).

Laurent Mourre, commercial director for Europe and North America, and Thierry Petit, marketing manager for submarines, answered our questions:

  • What are you proposing to the Royal Netherlands Navy ?
  • Is there a key design feature that stands out ?
  • Is your design future-proof ? For example, can it conduct seabed warfare operations ?

The interview was recorded during NEDS 2022 on 17 November 2022. (NEDS stands for “NIDV Exhibition Defence & Security” – NIDV stands for “Netherlands Industries for Defence and Security”).

During the event, Naval News interviewed all three contenders as well as the head of DMO (Defense Materiel Organization, the procurement office) about the Walrus-class replacement program.
