Australia’s Future XLUUV Named ‘Ghost Shark’

Anduril Industries and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) announced that the Extra Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (XLUUV) will be named "Ghost Shark".

Xavier Vavasseur 12 Dec 2022

The company previously announced in May 2022 that it had entered into “commercial negotiations” with the Australian Defense Force for a US$100m co-funded design, development and manufacturing program for Extra Large Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (XL-AUVs) for the Royal Australian Navy.

Today marked a significant milestone in our stealthy extra-large autonomous undersea vehicle program. We held a naming ceremony on Sydney Harbour where Royal Australian Navy and Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) stakeholders officially announced the XL-AUV will be named Ghost Shark.

According to Anduril, the ceremony held today included the arrival the Dive-LD autonomous submarine to the company’ Sydney Harbour base which will be used for testing and development of the XL-AUV. “The Dive-LD has arrived ahead of schedule in a major step forward in the partnership between Royal Australian Navy, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and Anduril Australia to design, develop and manufacture three Ghost Shark XL-AUVs in Australia” the company added.
