HD HHI Press Release – Translation by Naval News
On June 21st, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced its participation in the ‘National Maritime Security Forum FBM 2024’ held in Warsaw, Poland, on June 20th, where it presented Polish maritime security solutions.
Now in its ninth year, the ‘National Maritime Security Forum’ is co-hosted by the Polish Naval Academy of the Heroes of Westerplatte and the Warsaw Exhibition Board (ZTW S.A.). It is a major academic conference discussing Polish maritime security issues. This year, it was attended by 11 shipbuilding companies from around the world, as well as Polish Navy and defense industry experts, and maritime security officials, serving as a platform to discuss the challenges and future of the Polish maritime security environment.
As a major partner of the Polish Navy, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries participated in the presentation and panel discussion session on ‘The Defense Industry’s Involvement in the Polish Maritime Forces’ Modernization’ during the forum, offering solutions for Poland’s maritime security challenges and the development of the Navy and defense industry.
Particularly, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries gathered significant attention from Polish officials by being the only company among the eleven global shipbuilding companies that submitted a letter of intent for the ORKA project to propose two submarine platforms simultaneously: a 3,000-ton submarine (KSS-III PL) and a 2,000-ton developed submarine (HDS-2300).
Regarding this, Rear Admiral Wlodzimierz Kulagin, the Chief of the Armament Department, Inspectorate of the Polish Navy, expressed his gratitude, stating:
We appreciate HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ high level of understanding and interest in the modernization of the Polish Navy. It was very impressive that, unlike other companies, they presented two alternatives for the ORKA project that the Polish Navy could choose from.
The ORKA project is a new submarine construction project for the Polish Navy worth approximately 2.25 billion euros (3.35 trillion won) in size, involving acquisition of three submarines. Through securing this project, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to strengthen its relationship with the Polish Navy and pursue industrial cooperation with Polish shipbuilding companies.
Dr. Won-ho Joo, Head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Naval & Special Ship Business Unit (NSSBU), said:
Based on our world-class shipbuilding capabilities, we have proposed customized submarine solutions that meet both the needs of the Polish Navy and the development requirements of the local shipbuilding industry. We will do our utmost to gain an advantage in the ORKA project competition, which is expected to be bid on by the end of this year.
