Japan plans to field the supersonic ASM-3ER anti-ship missile in FY2027 with a new dual-role capability to target enemy AWACS and tankers at long range.
On December 25, 2020, Japan’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced that it would include the procurement cost of the new “ASM-3A” supersonic anti-ship missile in its defense budget request for fiscal year 2021.
Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) started developing a hypersonic guided missile able to attack both ships or ground targets. The missile, qualified as “game changer” by the Japanese Ministry of Defense’s agency, will use scramjet engine technology for propulsion.
