Türkiye’s Minister of Technology and Industry, Fatih KACIR, announced the new live firing test of SOM-J anti-ship cruise missile on social media accounts.

Minister KACIR shared the video of the live test of the missile, which shows the firing, mid course guidance, terminal phase and acqusition moments. The test-firing was made to a stationary sea target, and the missile hit the target successfully.

“The SOM-J cruise missile we developed at TÜBİTAK SAGE showcases how far our advanced engineering has come.” Mr. KACIR said on social media.

“In a live-fire test demonstrating demanding maneuvers to evade defence and radar systems and very low-altitude flight close to the surface, SOM-J proved itself.”

Developed by TUBITAK SAGE, the first test-firing of SOM-J missile against a sea target was performed in March 2025. In this test, the evasive manuevers of the missile against radars and defence systems, and sea skimming features were tested.

SOM-J is an air-to-surface missile that has been developed for use against heavily defended land and naval targets, and that is mounted inside the aircraft/ below the wing.

The missile’s modular design supports the operational flexibility of the missile. Built based on the existing SOM technologies that are already in service with the Turkish Air Force, SOM-J today provides enhanced capabilities. The long-range SOM-J is a cost-effective solution due to its reduced observability, among its other capabilities.
