Dutch MoD press release – Translated by Naval News

The Dutch Defense Ministry (MoD) has ordered four new anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates, two for the Netherlands and two for Belgium. These ships will be armed with 76mm Sovraponte naval gun systems. The MoD signed a procurement contract with Italian defense company Leonardo on 20 July 2023.

In addition to standard ammunition, the guns can fire guided ammunition, which are controlled by an illumination radar. This feature enables the frigate to better defend itself against modern threats. These guns are capable of engaging land, surface, and air targets.

Leonardo will also provide a spare system. This gun will be fitted accordingly as a replacement for the systems undergoing major maintenance. This way the battle power of the ship remains unchanged.

Sovraponte for LPDs and Supply Ship

In addition, the contract includes an option for the delivery of 3 more Sovraponte naval gun systems. These are for HNLMS Karel Doorman and HNLMS John de Witt, respectively. These guns will be used to replace the current Goalkeeper close-in weapon systems. The third gun will be used aboard the new supply ship HNLMS Den Helder, which will be launched in 2025. The gun will be mounted later.

The ASW frigates’ guns are set to be delivered in early 2027.

This is an important development for Leonardo as it marks the first export customers for the new naval gun system, in a single deal: Belgium and the Netherlands (two European and NATO countries).

Leonardo is expecting two more deals for the same frigate class:

Artist impressions of the ASWF show MARLIN 40mm guns fitted as secondary artillery. A deal for this system is yet to be announced.

In addition, the Italian company announced last year that the Netherlands have chosen the “LIONFISH® Top” variant 12.7mm RWS to equip most of its fleet: Holland-class patrol vessels, LPD (Landing Platform Dock) and JSS (Joint Support Ship) units, Johan de Witt and Karel Doorman classes, and Den Helder-class Combat Support Ship. It would appear logical that the LIONFISH RWS is also selected to equip the ASWF. However the Italian company is facing competition from Beligum’s FN Herstal who is supplying its Sea deFNder 12.7mm RWS for the rMCM program.
