Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the delivery of Saab Lightweight Torpedoes (SLWT) and torpedo tubes. The order value is approximately SEK 1.3 billion, with the start of deliveries during 2026.

Saab press release

Saab Lightweight Torpedo, named Torped 47 by the Swedish Armed Forces, is Sweden’s new light torpedo system aimed at strengthening Swedenโ€™s naval defence capabilities. The torpedo is intended primarily to be used from submarines and surface ships, but it is also prepared for integration on helicopters.

This is the second order from Sweden for the SLWT, with the first deliveries to FMV beginning in 2022.

โ€œWe are proud to continue to support Sweden in its efforts to modernise underwater weapon systems in order to protect the Baltic Sea region. This state-of-the-art system is providing the Swedish Armed Forces with increased capabilities, including torpedoes, spare parts, training systems, and technical support.โ€

Mats Wicksell, Head of Saabโ€™s business area Kockums.

The torpedo has been specially developed for the environment in the Baltic Sea region with its shallow water and a complex topography and seabed. These place high demands on the locating and identification of submarines, as well as on navigation and communication by the torpedo.

Naval News comments:

Saab began deliveries of Torpedo 47 in late 2022, with the system becoming operational the following year. The weapon is fitted in both submarines and Visby class corvettes. Work is also underway to explore the integration of Torpedo 47 in โ€˜non-traditionalโ€™ (likely uncrewed) platforms. At UDT 2025, Naval News covered the launch testing from CB 90 topic (check out the video below).

As reported by Naval News, FMV is already considering a number of improvements to Torpedo 47 including a wideband (multi-frequency) acoustic homing head, improved wake-homing performance; replacement of the copper wire guidance with a fibre-optic link; and anti-torpedo/anti-autonomous underwater vehicle functionality.
