Following the June 2019 call for expressions of interest from startups sourced by GICAN, nearly 40 applications were submitted for the SEAstart program by August 2019.
The twelve selected startups (details on their activities can be found below) are involved in maritime industry R & D and innovation: smart ship, green ship, smart yard and smart offshore. The selected startups are intended to integrate the civil and military markets, which are complementary for the French naval industry.
For a year and a half, these twelve startups will be accompanied by GICAN to develop their maritime markets. The selected startups are located throughout France. They have an average turnover of 600,000 euros per year and an average of 9 employees.
“The launch of the SEAstart program must be an opportunity for the entire French naval industry, and should allow the rapid development of collaborations between GICAN members and startups. Through the program, we want to allow startups the best integration possible in the French naval industrial network, actively participating in the “navalisation” of their activities. This initiative must illustrate the tremendous innovation capabilities of the French maritime sector, both civilian and military.
Fabien Napolitano, iXblue CEO, member of the SEAStart jury
Coordinated by Jacques Orjubin, the GICAN’s Communications & Public Relations Officer, the SEAstart programme is expected to lay the groundwork for meaningful partnerships to develop between shipbuilding manufacturers and start-ups, so as to help the latter successfully integrate the industrial fabric. Four strands underpin the programme’s support strategy: Business, Funding, Expertise and Visibility.
