The Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier of project 1143.5 will leave the dockside after repairs in the next few days, Alexei Rakhmanov, director-general of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, said.

“The dock repairs are almost completed. The only thing left is to prepare the ship for repairs at the moorage. This will happen in the next few days. We are going to refill a ditch with water, pull down the barrier to enable the aircraft carrier to sail to moorage for the final stage of repairs.”

Alexei Rakhmanov, Director-General of the United Shipbuilding Corporation

He also said that the second half of the repair works had to be re-oriented because of an incident involving a PD-50 dock.

“The repairs of Admiral Kuznetsov are scheduled to be over in 2024,” Rakhmanov added.

Previous reports said that Kuznetsov had been placed in a modernized dry dock in the branch of “35 ship repair plant” of JSC Ship Repair Center “Zvezdochka” early in June.

The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier will get a totally new combat potential upon the renovation. It will serve the Navy for another 10-15 years.

Naval News comments:

Admiral Kuznetsov began the overhaul in 2017 after operating on the Syrian coast. In October 2018, it was leaving the floating PD-50 dock of the 82nd shipyard in Roslyakovo when the dock began to sink. A crane fell on the deck because of the list. On December 12, 2019, a fire broke out on the carrier. Kuznetsov is currently in the 35th shipyard in Murmansk.

Repairs are expected to cost 300 to 350 million rubles. Some of the systems aboard the vessel will be upgraded, such as the CIWS.
