
U.S. Navy Testing EPF as Drone Mother Ship
The U.S. Navy tested expeditionary fast transport vessel USNS Spearhead (T-EPF 1) as a mother ship for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV).

According to local media, the Russian Navy started to experiment the use of UUVs and USVs from its Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov-class frigate. UAVs are set to be tested from Russia’s latest generation of frigates as well.

As Unmanned Underwater Vehicles are called to proliferate in a near future, the US Naval Surface Warfare Center’s (NSWC) Panama City Division is now exploring new options to ease the UUV launch and recovery phases.

Boeing won a $43 million contract for the fabrication, test, and delivery of four Orca Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (XLUUVs) and associated support elements.

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) announced today that it has been awarded a contract from Advanced Technology International (ATI) to develop and demonstrate a prototype Lithium-ion Fault Tolerant (LiFT) battery system for the U.S. Navy’s prototype “Snakehead” Large-Displacement Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (LDUUV).
