South Korea approved plans to construct the second batch of three destroyers, called KDX III Batch II, by 2028 with a budget of around 3.9 trillion won (US$3.3 billion), according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The U.S. Navy christened its third and final Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer, the USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002) at General Dynamics-Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Maine on Saturday, April 27.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned the JS “Shiranui” (pennant number 120) during a ceremony held today at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Nagasaki shipyard. JS Shiranui is the second Asahi-class anti-submarine destroyer (25DD program) of the JMSDF.
Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division delivered the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) to the U.S. Navy on 22 February with shipbuilders, ship’s force and representatives of Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Gulf Coast in attendance.
DDG 120 will be built in the Flight IIA configuration with the Aegis Baseline 9 Combat System which includes Integrated Air and Missile Defense capability. This system delivers quick reaction time, high firepower, and increased electronic countermeasures capability for Anti-Air Warfare. Delivery to the fleet is planned for Fiscal Year 2021.
The U.S. Navy’s newest Zumwalt-class destroyer, USS Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001), was commissioned January 26 at Naval Air Station North Island, California.
China’s tenth Type 052D Destroyer (NATO reporting name: Luyang III class) and Sixth Type 071 Landing Platform Dock (NATO reporting name: Yuzhao class) were both commissioned with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) on 12 January 2019.
